AV for Professionals
Many years ago, working on impact documentaries for development organizations across Pakistan, I would arrive with my crew to find that a remarkable story had already unfolded. Communities transformed, lives changed. Professionals in the field who had led those programs and witnessed every step of it, had no easy way to document the story as it happened. We filmed what we could to reconstruct that transformation, and I repeatedly imagined how amazing it would have been if those moments had been captured as they were unfolding, if only those professionals had been equipped and trained to document what they were witnessing.
Smartphones have filled the equipment gap. This course is built to fill the training gap.
Researchers, educators, conservationists, health workers, and community organizers, working in the field, in the classroom, and in communities, are witnessing moments that will not come again. Many are already reaching for their phones, the instinct to document is already there.
This course is built for such professionals.
The course runs across three tiers, each building on the last.
Tier 1 is free and self-paced. It builds the foundational skill of learning to see before you shoot. How to read a scene, break it into its component shots, and understand why each one matters. By the end, you can produce a short, purposeful video document using your smartphone.
Tier 2 goes deeper into craft. Story structure, shooting to edit, continuity, screen direction, and the discipline of pre-visualization. You learn to think in sequences, not just individual shots, and to arrive at a scene with a plan and a story to tell.
Tier 3 is mentored practice. You bring your own work, from your own professional context, and develop it with direct feedback.
